Due to potential choking and safety risks, McDonald’s has announced a voluntary safety recall of its Hello Kitty lollipop whistles distributed as part of Happy Meals and Might Kids Meals,Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, November 11.
The company announced the recall after learning that the components of the China-made toy may detach and pose aspiration and choking hazards among children. The largest restaurant chain already received two reports of choking, with one of the affected children requiring medical attention.
In an online statement, 1.6 million out of the approximately 2.3 million defective toys in the U.S. have already been recovered by the company.
Consumers are requested to return the defective products to any McDonald’s branch for a free replacement toy, and a choice between a bag of sliced apples and a yogurt tube. This recall comes at an inopportune time for McDonald’s, as the restaurant chain is already dealing with decreased third-quarter profits and increased competition from other restaurant chains.
